Transcultures is an interdisciplinary cultural organisation supporting the production and diffusion of electronic and sound arts in Belgium and internationally. Since 1996, Transcultures has produced a large number of interdisciplinary, electronic and sound works with over 200 artists, and conceived, organised and produced nomadic sound art and performance festivals City Sonics (since 2003) and Les Transnumériques (since 2005), linking French and Belgian cities, along with workshops; laboratories and think tanks. In 2008, Transcultures launched a new interdisciplinary centre to promote and develop electronic and sound projects in Mons. Transcultures is the project coordinator for TRACES.
Transcultures sends its productions and supported artists abroad to relevant music/sound/digital arts festivals, organizations and networks. In addition to educational initiatives to raise public awareness about electronic and sound arts, Transcultures supports young talents and artists from Belgian and European Art Schools whose works are then presented in City Sonics, Les Transnumériques and associated festivals, such as Ososophere in Strasbourg and Sonorama- Besançon.Since 2009, Transcultures is coordinating (with the French community of Belgium) the Pépinières européennes pour jeunes artistes program, welcoming digital and sound artists for a 3 months residency, with the help of the city of Mons. Other residencies are organized through TRANSAT Contamine program, with the Society for Art and Technology (SAT) of Montreal, and international exchanges with partners. Short residencies and workshops for artists from the French community of Belgium are also supported by Transcultures throughout the year.
Transcultures is regularly invited to give lectures, workshops and to participate in debates, think tanks,… on issues of interdisciplinary, contemporary, sound and media creation. Publications (books, DVDs, CDs, websites,…) on these topics have been published in collaboration with associated labels and publishers.
Mons is one of the main cities hosting les Transnumériques, a nomadic electronic arts festival coordinated by Transcultures. Mons is very open to contemporary arts, both 'visual arts,' with the recent renewal of the Museum of Fine Arts, and the MACS, Museum for Contemporary Arts in Grand Hornu, in the outskirts of the city, which is internationally renowned; and 'living arts,' with technology, culture and technological economy being very important for the policy of the City.
Other significant organisations and centers include Technocité (centre of formation for technology and new media tools), CECN (Center for electronic and contemporary writings, with a programme of workshops linking performing arts and new technology, also co-producer of multimedia works and festivals such as city sonics and les transnumeriques), le manège.mons (cultural center and transborder oriented with le manège of Maubeuge in France, annual season of theatre, dance, music, digital arts and cultural mediation + festivals), Musiques Nouvelles (center of production of contemporary and electronic music and an international ensemble) or Numédiart (programme of research on new media art linking the Faculté polytechnique of Mons and the University of Louvain_la_Neuve), with all of these operators collaborating together on concrete projects, and also working in close collaboration with Transcultures. Direct educational links connect Transcultures with ESAPV Mons art school and ENSAV (La Cambre) in Brussels. Microsoft Europe and Google Research chose to establish their new offices in Mons complementing the Virtualis platform (grouping many high tech companies) and other high level private trusts or smaller companies.
This techno-economical factor is developing a close relationship with the cultural stimulation and open policy of the City of Mons, also a candidate for the European Capital of Culture in 2015. All this gives Mons and its cultural operators a special flavour in a very open and dynamic framework for international and prospective projects.
